The Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge covers 18,280 acres and is located in the bog country of north-central Minnesota. An important resting and feeding area for ducks, especially ring-necked duck, scaup and mallards, the refuge offers extensive wild rice beds, an important waterfowl food.
Waterfowl are best observed in September and October and again in April and May. The refuge has an auto tour route.
In addition to hunting and fishing, hiking and cross-country skiing are popular. Though the refuge is open year-round, refuge roads are closed December through April.
