Since 1962, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been setting aside wetlands to preserve habitat for fish and wildlife. The Fergus Falls District consists of 44,000 acres in five west central Minnesota counties.
These prairie wetlands are preserved as a nesting and resting area for waterfowl along their major migration routes.
The prairie potholes of the region were formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. The ponds and shallow marshes provide shelter and food protein for growing ducklings.
