Located in the northeastern tip of Minnesota, the Superior National Forest stretches 150 miles along the U.S.-Canadian border, encompassing 3.85 million acres.

This hilly deep pine forest is home to moose, wolves, black bears, loons and migratory birds.

More than 2,250 miles of streams flow within the forest, including the renowned Boundary Waters and Canoe Area Wilderness, where you can canoe, portage and camp in the spirit of the French-Canadian voyageurs of 200 years ago.

Permits, for which a fee is charged, are required to paddle, hike or camp in the wilderness area. For more information about permits, call 877-550-6777.

Motorized equipment is not allowed in most of the Boundary Waters and Canoe Area Wilderness.

The Superior National Forest contains the country's only remaining home range of the timber wolf and the International Wolf Center, dedicated to preserving this symbol of the wilderness.

Biking, fishing, hiking and winter sports, including dog sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and winter camping, are all outstanding in the Superior National Forest.

Those outside the United States can call 518-885-9964 for wilderness permits and 518-885-3639 for campground reservations.
