The Windom wetland district acquires and restores wetlands in southwestern Minnesota to increase waterfowl nesting habitat and prevent encroachment on existing waterfowl production areas.
The district office office is located 1.5 miles east of Windom on County Road 17.
Heron Lake was once known as the Chesapeake Bay of the Midwest because of its tremendous canvasback duck migrations.
The 6,400-acre shallow prairie lake, like other area lakes, is in declining health. As a result, Heron Lake has become the focus of a multi-partner effort to restore the lake and its 474 square-mile watershed.
All waterfowl areas are open year-round to hiking, bird-watching, nature photography, wildlife observation, and environmental education.
The main focus of the refuge is to maintain diverse, healthy grasslands adjacent to wetlands.
Waterfowl populations are monitored on both refuge land and adjacent private property. Each spring, staff and volunteers conduct a census of breeding pairs.
