The Minnesota Valley district protects a patchwork of wetlands in the Minnesota, Cannon and Mississippi river watersheds.
Before European settlement, the region was covered by prairie pothole, native prairie, oak savanna and big woods habitat. The district protects areas in 13 counties in southeastern Minnesota.
Major breeding waterfowl species are mallards, blue winged teal and wood ducks. Breeding by redheads, ruddy ducks and gadwalls has also been confirmed.
All areas are open year-round to hiking, bird-watching, nature photography and general wildlife observation. These areas are also open to hunting and trapping.
The goal of the refuge is to increase habitat for nesting and migrating waterfowl while maintaining the area's wetlands and grasslands.
