Located in the southwest corner of the state, Blue Mounds State Park is full of natural surprises.
A Sioux quartzite cliff rises 100 feet above the plains. A bison herd grazes on the prairie. Prickly pear cactus blooms in June and July. A sea of prairie grasses and flowers sway in the wind.
The park is also a favorite for birdwatchers who want to see nesting blue grosbeaks, several western species and other birds that live in the tall-grass prairie.
Bison, elk, wolves and prairie chickens roamed this part of Minnesota more than 150 to 200 years ago. Today, a small herd of bison remain. The 1,826-acre park has a small population of coyotes and a stable deer population.
The visitor center, once the home of author Frederick Manfred, features displays detailing the natural history of the area. Check with the main office for times.
There are 71 drive-in campsites, three campground loops are located near the wildlife viewing pond. Forty campsites have electric hookups, including one wheelchair-accessible site. In the winter, campsites--including electric sites--are also available.
