Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park offers beautiful vistas above and below ground.
Acquired by the state park in 1988, Mystery Cave has 13 miles of underground passages. From mid-April through October, park naturalists lead tours in the cave, a mysterious subterranean world of stalactites and stalagmites, ribbons of flowstone and underground pools.
Above ground, there are woods to investigate, a wonderland where spring wildflowers give way to lush, dense summer growth.
Three streams are prime habitat for trout, and prime fishing grounds for green-backed herons and kingfishers. A bridge across the stream yields lovely views and leads to an historic brick store, built in 1857 as a trading post for early settlers and Native Americans.
The park has 17 miles of hiking trails, 11 miles of cross-country skiing trails and 5.5 miles of snowmobiling trails. Equestrians use 15 miles of trails and a 60-site equestrian campground. There are also 73 semi-modern campsites available for traditional campers.
