Naturalists use the term "Big Woods" to describe the hardwood forest of maples and basswood that once dominated south central Minnesota.
Nerstrand is the largest of the few remnants of these Big Woods. Its 1,700 acres delight hikers, photographers and naturalists.
In spring, the woods bloom with sharp-lobed hepatica, Dutchman's breeches, marsh marigold and the rare Minnesota trout lily. In fall, the forest blazes with color.
Spring also draws birds, including tufted titmice, blue-gray gnatcatchers, blue-winged and cerulean warblers and others. Patient and quiet explorers might see these and other wildlife, including deer and foxes.
Hikers find solitude on 11 miles of hiking trails, including a half-mile walk to Hidden Falls. There are also six miles of cross-country ski trails and four miles of snowmobile trails.
