Lake Carlos State Park embraces 1,236 acres of woodlands, prairie and pothole lakes, but it is the 1.5 miles of lake shoreline that draws most visitors.
Lake Carlos is 163 feet deep with 14 miles of shoreline and many shallow areas for northern pike and drop-offs for walleye. Besides fishing, visitors use the lake for boating, water-skiing and swimming.
The lake attracts a variety of waterfowl, including ducks and loons. Smaller lakes and ponds are tucked into the park's woodlands, which are inhabited by deer, raccoons and fox. The big, handsome pileated woodpecker is sometimes seen here.
About 14 miles of hiking trails lead through lush forest. The park also includes wetlands, with a three-mile interpretive trail winding through. Nine miles of bridle trails and seven horse campsites serve equestrians.
The park also has five miles of trails for cross-country skiing and nine miles for snowmobiling. Snowshoe rentals are available. A warming house with fireplace is available to winter visitors.
The campground on the lake has 74 campsites and the upper campground has 51 sites.
