In the last three miles of its journey to Lake Superior, the Cascade River leaps down ledge after ledge for a total drop of 900 feet.
Visitors to Cascade River State Park watch the bubbling white foam from a footbridge or from a viewing spot above the river. In this boreal rain forest, lush moss and ferns grow from dripping rock walls and water beads on fir needles.
The 2,813-acre park has 18 miles of hiking trails, including two leading to the forested tops of Moose and Lookout mountains. Trailheads provide access to the Superior Hiking Trail and the North Shore State Trail. Five walk-in campsites serve backpackers.
The park, with six miles of Lake Superior shoreline, draws anglers who fish in lake, river and stream.
A warming house is open for winter recreationists, including cross-country skiers and snowmobilers.
Cascade is part of northern Minnesota's largest winter deer yard, offering many opportunities for deer sighting. Wolves also reveal their presence through tracks in the snow.
The park is 10 miles southwest of Grand Marais, and approximately 265 miles from the Twin Cities. The office is located just off State Hwy. 61 at mile post 101.
