Once the hunting ground of the Algonquins, Yankee Springs Recreation Area's 5,200 acres of rugged terrain, bogs and marshes lend themselves to many kinds of recreation.
Nine lakes offer excellent fishing and all kinds of water sports.
Six hiking trails range from the half-mile Sassafras Nature Trail to the five-mile Long Lake Trail, which crosses a bog, follows an old wagon road to a scenic overlook and leads to the Devil's Soupbowl, a crater carved by glaciers.
There are 15.5 miles of hiking trails in all, and it is not uncommon to see white-tailed deer and other wildlife along the trails.
A 12-mile mountain bike trail takes cyclists over rugged hills and tough sand pockets and requires a creek crossing.
Equestrians have nine miles of bridle trails, as well as their own campground.
Other facilities include a modern campground on Gun Lake and rustic camping at Deep Lake.
