The Huron River twists and turns through the center of the 4,000-acre Island Lake Recreation Area, making it a favorite canoeing destination. Paddlers may stay at a campground accessible only from the river. Canoes can be rented at Kent Lake.
A 14-mile woodland trail is popular with mountain bicyclists. It offers several loop options and portions of it take in Spring Mill Pond and run for several miles along both sides of the river. Snowmobilers use the trail in winter.
Beaches are found at Island and Kent lakes and Spring Mill Pond. Spring Mill has a special catch-and-release early trout season beginning April 1.
In addition to the canoe campground, Island Lake has two frontier cabins for rent.
