The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 9,300 acres of marsh, bottomland hardwood, grassland and agricultural lands. Four rivers cross the refuge to form Michigan's largest tributary, the Saginaw River.
Frequent flooding and diverse habitat make this an excellent spot for viewing waterfowl, shore birds, wading birds, songbirds and raptors. Bird activity is highest during spring and fall migration periods.
Environmental education programs are offered to school children throughout the year at the Green Point Environmental Learning Center in Saginaw, the phone number is 989-759-1669.
Shiawassee oversees a part of the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
