Isle Royale National Park covers 571,790 acres of islands and water in northern Lake Superior, 56 miles northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The island is accessible only by boats that depart from Houghton and Copper Harbor, Mich., and Grand Portage, Minn., and by floatplane from Houghton. Cars are not permitted on the island, travel on the island is by foot or boat.

The island is renowned for supporting one of the Midwest's surviving wolf packs. It is also home to moose, red foxes, beavers and loons.

Hiking, camping, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and scuba diving are some of the many activities on Isle Royale. Guided hikes to lighthouses and natural features are available.

Divers can explore well-preserved shipwrecks in Lake Superior.

About 80 percent of the national park is covered by lakes, shallow beaver ponds, streams, and the deep cold waters of Lake Superior.

Anglers fish for lake and rainbow trout, northern pike, walleye and salmon.

The park is open from April 16-Oct. 31.
