Hoffmaster State Park offers many attractions, including three miles of fine, sandy shoreline along Lake Michigan, towering sand dunes and a stairway leading to a high dune overlook.
The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center offers environmental education programs, exhibits and hands-on displays that detail the story of Michigan’s sand dunes.
There are 293 campsites, picnic areas and a wheelchair-accessible visitor center.
Visitors hike, cross-country ski, swim and fish and enjoy the interpretive program.
With more than 10 miles of trails, the casual hiker or the serious student of nature finds a variety of interesting natural features. Upland, shoreline and aquatic birds are abundant. Hawks soar on the air currents of the dunes when winds are from the east.
A main attraction is the Dune Climb Stairway leading to the top of a high sand dune. There, an observation deck offers a panoramic view of the dunes and Lake Michigan.
Snowmobiles and off-road vehicles are not allowed in the park. Bicycles are allowed only on paved roads.
