The Michigan Wetland Management District protects two waterfowl nesting areas, including the 160-acre Schlee Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) in Jackson County and the 77-acre Kinney WPA in Van Buren County.
The areas are managed to preserve wetlands and upland habitat for migrating and nesting waterfowl, migratory birds and resident wildlife.
Dense nesting cover has been established in the upland area. Rotational haying is permitted to maintain and increase the ground cover, reduce infestation of alien weeds and prevent encroachment of woody vegetation.
Access to both sites is restricted to foot travel only.
Wildlife observation and waterfowl hunting are popular activities.
Michigan has a third WPA, the 95-acre Schoonover WPA, in Lenawee County. Staff of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, located east of Toledo, Ohio, manages this WPA. All three sites are managed as a mixture of wetlands and grasslands to provide high-quality nesting and brood-rearing habitat for waterfowl and a variety of migratory songbirds.
The Schlee WPA is located on the north side of Page Road approximately six miles east of US 127 on the east side of Jackson. The Kinney WPA is in southeast Van Buren County, approximately 3.5 miles south of Lawton, near the intersection of County Road 352 and 29th Street. The Schoonover WPA, in western Lenawee County, is located on Medina Road approximately three miles south of Hudson and eight miles east of US 127.
