In a region prized for rolling hills and mountain streams, Windsor State Forest, off River Road in Windsor, is a standout. A prime reason is the falls at Windsor Jambs, where Windsor Jambs Brook plunges through a gorge 25 feet wide, walled in by 80 feet of perpendicular granite.
A popular attraction is the day-use area on the north branch of the Westfield River, where a Civilian Conservation Corps dam has created an impoundment for swimming. There's a supervised grassy beach and 50 picnic sites with table and grill.
Twenty-four campsites are available from May to Labor Day on a first-come, first-served basis or by calling.
The forest is open for hunting. The Westfield is stocked with brook, rainbow and brown trout, and is a good fly-fishing stream.
History buffs explore Windigo Farm, a national historic site consisting of a 1790 farmhouse and outbuildings.
There are 10 miles of trails and dirt roads in the forest good for hiking and mountain biking. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers also use the forest, and it is adjacent to the Notchview Reservation, a site good for cross-country skiing.
