Formerly part of Fort Devens, this 1,667-acre refuge protects freshwater wetlands along the floodplain of the Nashua River. It is located about two miles from Route 110 in Harvard off Still River Depot Road.
Oxbow offers a variety of activities, including hiking, wildlife observation, canoeing, nature education, photography, fishing and hunting.
The refuge is open for hunting white-tailed deer, woodcock, waterfowl, snipe, squirrel, rabbit, ruffled grouse and turkey. Because of the wetlands, only non-toxic shot may be used for hunting waterfowl or upland game. Refuge permits are required, and all other state regulations for these seasons also apply.
Guided walks are offered several times a year by refuge volunteers and birding clubs.
The only facilities at the refuge are a parking area, restrooms, trail and canoe ramp. Pets are not allowed on the refuge.
The refuge is managed to protect migratory birds.
Fields are mowed periodically to maintain favorable habitat for the American woodcock.
Sandy soils in parts of the refuge are managed in a way to promote the nesting season of the Blandings turtle, a rare species.
