Situated between state routes 220 and 36 in western Allegany County, the 9,200 acres of Dans Mountain make up Maryland's largest contiguous state-owned forest.

The steep ridges of Dans Mountain afford a remarkable view of the North Branch of the Potomac and its forested valley.

The dense woods support many songbird species, evidenced by their calls and the brilliant flashes of color they make darting from tree to tree.

Also in these dense woods are timber rattlesnakes — poisonous, but docile and reluctant to strike unless provoked. The quiet, patient visitor may be rewarded with a glimpse of a bobcat or black bear, or more likely see their tracks in the snow.

Hunters flock to the mountain for its large wild turkey population, but deer, ruffed grouse and squirrels are also taken.

Many trails and old roads suitable for hiking cut through the woods at Dans Mountain. Wild berries in summer make a delicious treat for the hungry trekker. A primitive camping area is open in the spring and fall.
