The two parcels of the Billmeyer-Belle Grove management areas were originally acquired by the state for use as game bird farms to supplement declining wild populations of turkeys and other species.
Today, the tracts totaling 1,100 acres are open for a variety of recreational uses. The state also demonstrates forest management techniques there.
The forests and fields of the management area teem with wildlife. Wild turkeys are now abundant. Other bird species include ruffed grouse.
Hunters also look for woodcocks, deer, squirrels and rabbits.
A variety of trails and old logging roads afford fine hiking and plentiful targets for nature lovers armed with a camera or binoculars.
