Situated at the top of the Chesapeake Bay in Cecil County, Elk Neck State Park offers diverse terrain and recreational activities. The park's 2,188 acres include sandy beaches, marshlands and heavily wooded bluffs rising above the Northeast River.
Anglers get their pick of pond and saltwater fishing. In the spring, there's a catch-and-release season for striped bass.
More than seven miles of hiking trails, mostly easy going, wind through hilly hardwood forests and marshland. Local birders visit regularly. Animal residents include beavers and deer.
One trail goes to the 1833-vintage Turkey Point Lighthouse, which is still in service.
The park is open for hunting in deer season, and disabled hunters with state certification may hunt from their vehicles in a designated area in the park.
There are 278 campsites in the park. One area in the camping area offers wheelchair-accessible campsites and restrooms. Camping is year-round, but the seven mini-camper cabins and nine uninsulated rental cabins, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, are closed in winter.
