Bradbury Mountain State Park is a calm haven just six miles from Freeport's busy downtown shopping area.
The park's namesake is a 484-foot peak whose rocky summit, a moderate climb, provides splendid views of Casco Bay and the White Mountains. The mountain is also a popular spot for watching migratory ospreys, red-tailed hawks and eagles.
Thirteen miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails course through most of the park's 800 acres. Trails are groomed in winter. Horseback riding and mountain biking are allowed on 11 miles of the trail system.
Route 9 bisects the park, with the mountain and day-use area on the northwest side and a campground opposite.
The 43 primitive campsites, open year-round, are fairly close together, but the park is not crowded.
For day use, Bradbury has a picnic area and a softball field. History buffs should examine the park's 19th-century cattle pound, a rock enclosure where stray animals were held until their owners could bail them out.
