There are more than 40 good trout and salmon lakes or ponds within a 10-mile radius of Rangeley Lakes State Park, including the park's namesake.
But the region offers more than great fishing. It is a four-season resort area offering a wide array of recreational opportunities in its beautiful lakes, woods and mountains.
The 869-acre park is at the heart of it all, located on South Shore Drive between routes 17 and 4. The park's 691 acres include more than a mile of Rangeley Lake shoreline and 50 campsites, plus a group site among the spruce-fir woods. There are wheelchair-accessible campsites.
Park attractions for day users include swimming from a grassy shore, 40 nicely dispersed picnic sites, a boat launch and tie-up and a children's play area. Campers have the use of docks, fully accessible showers and an RV dump station.
The Rangeley Lakes region, like Moosehead to the northeast, is famed for moose-watching. Park staff can provide a map of sites all but guaranteed to provide a view of a moose. Birdwatching is also rewarding.
For hikers, the park contains the mile-long Moose Country Corridor Trail. More challenging is a trail up 2,443-foot Bald Mountain, about three miles outside the park and accessible from Bald Mountain Road.
Blueberry paths split from the wooded main trail, which leads to stunning long vistas at the summit.
