Savvy travelers heading Down East often avoid busy Route 1 and take Route 3, a fast and scenic inland highway between Augusta and Belfast.
Route 3's virtues include Lake St. George State Park, midway between the two cities. This little gem offers cold clear waters of spring-fed Lake St. George with Life Guards and 38 lakefront campsites with shower and toilet facilities.
The park's grassy lakeshore has picnic sites, a bathhouse, a boat launch, and rental rowboats and canoes. Anglers fish the lake for stocked brook trout and landlocked salmon, as well as the native bass and white perch.
Most of the park's land is across Route 3, opposite the lake. In that tract are 10 miles of mixed-use trails, good for hiking, mountain biking for the hardy, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
