Famed naturalist John James Audubon found inspiration for his paintings of birds and animals in the peaceful woods of Henderson, now preserved as John James Audubon State Park.
The museum, which is on the National Historic Register, interprets Audubon's life through original prints, paintings and personal memorabilia. Audubon's four-volume folio is on permanent display.
There's also a Nature Center with an observation area and a Discovery Center with hands-on exhibits and educational programs.
Hikers have 5.5 miles of trails in the nature preserve.
Anglers cast for bass and bluegill in the park lake, which is off-limits to gas-powered boats. Canoes and hydrobikes are available for rent from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The park is located along a main migratory flyway, so birders can enjoy many of the species that Audubon studied. Warblers, which make stops in April and October, are an especially big attraction.
Facilities include a 69-site campground, six cottages, a nine-hole golf course and tennis courts, a meeting room and museum store.
