The Daniel Boone National Forest, established in 1937, covers more than 700,000 acres of eastern Kentucky, including portions of 21 counties. Laurel River Lake, the Natural Arch Recreation Area and the Tater Knob Fire Tower are all outstanding sites.
There are plenty of opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking, hunting, swimming and nature study.
The 269-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail extends the length of the forest and links many of its more developed recreation areas.
Covering 29,000 acres near Slade, the Red River Gorge Geological Area contains more than 100 natural arches, including Sky Bridge, which offers a panoramic view of the gorge.
Wheelchair-accessible campsites exist at some campgrounds.
While entry to the forest is free, some areas charge for camping and other use.
