At the heart of this intriguing resort park are more that 20 caverns, many not yet mapped, winding beneath its forested hills.
Among the better-know are Cascade Cave with its underground waterfall and X Cave, filled with unique formations shaped like fans and spirals.
Above ground, there are more than 20 miles of wooded hiking trials, ranging from easy to difficult, and several sandstone arches. A newly-opened multi-use trail is available to hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers.
The park offers guided canoe trips on Tygart's Creek or Smokey Lake. Guided horseback tours are also available on a seasonal basis.
There is a nine-hole regulation golf course open year-round and miniature golf and swimming are also availably seasonally.
Carter Caves offers 28 guest rooms, 10 two-bedroom/two-bathroom cottages (eight with fireplaces) and 89 year-round campsites with limited winter facilities. A dining room features traditional Kentucky dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
