Grayson Lake State Park is as serenely beautiful as it is historically rich. Majestic sandstone bluffs form a walled canyon high above the 1,512-acre lake.
The Shawnee and Cherokee camped under the cliffs, and early settlers were attracted to the unique geology, hoping to find diamonds, silver and gold.
Today, visitors at Grayson Lake can enjoy a picnic, hike, or camp. There are 71 sites in the spacious, modern campground, which is open April through October.
A launching ramp provides boat access to Grayson Lake. The 74.2 miles of shoreline range from gentle slopes to scenic canyons. Located three miles from the park, a marina rents fishing boats and pontoon boats and has bait, groceries and restrooms.
The Beech-Hemlock Forest Trail leads to distinctive plants, rock formations and wildlife. The trail begins near the theater area and circles the campground for less than a mile near the shoreline of the lake.
Of particular interest along the trail are several species of ferns, mosses, lichens, the flowering rhododendron, "lizard head rock" and an unusual combination of beech and hemlock trees.
The latest addition to the park is Hidden Cover, an 18-hole golf course. Call 866-905-7888 for more information.
