Cross Timbers State Park comprises five recreation areas surrounding 2,800-acre Toronto Reservoir. Here forested flood plains are surrounded by terraces of prairie and hills of oak savanna, resulting in diverse flora and fauna.
Five hiking trails wind through extensively wooded habitat teeming with a variety of native wildlife. The longest trail (12 miles), runs along the north and east sides of the lake with a total of four connecting loops of trails.
A mile-long trail explores the Woodson Cove area, and two shorter trails can be found on the west side of the lake. A new 1.5-mile trail winds through the old-growth forest of the Cross Timbers.
The oldest trees are identified by interpretive markers placed along the trail. The trails are open to hikers and bicyclists year round.
Birds attract much attention here, and bald eagles are often found around the reservoir in winter.
There's good fishing for bass, crappie, flatheads and channel catfish. The park allows bow hunting for deer and turkey in season, and more hunting is available in the wildlife area.
Some winters provide enough snow for cross-country skiing.
Park naturalists are on staff in the summer to help visitors learn more about the area. Interpretive, recreational and cultural programs are offered throughout the year.
The park has three cabins.
