Perry State Park sits next to Kansas' top crappie-fishing lake, a reputation that attracts anglers in search of a bit of luck. But other recreational opportunities abound in this wooded region of northeast Kansas.
A new bike trail features two loops, one offering an easy two-mile ride, the other covering rough terrain for three miles. Equestrians ride on an 18-mile trail.
Visitors may see wild turkey, deer, an occasional red fox or bobcat and, in winter, bald eagles.
The 11,000-acre wildlife area includes about 1,000 acres of marshes, making it a great place to watch migrant waterfowl. Quail are usually abundant. Mink are sometimes seen around the dam and bridges.
Hunting is restricted to sections of the wildlife area. Perry's marshes offer good muskrat, mink and beaver trapping.
The park has a large campground, including 104 full-service sites and 350 tent-only sites, a swimming beach, bathhouse and nature trails. A marina is nearby.
