From the caves and crevices of Horsethief Canyon to giant stone "mushrooms" rising from the prairie, Kanopolis and nearby Mushroom Rocks state parks are places of rugged beauty.
Hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers share 24.9 miles of trails in Horsethief Canyon at Kanopolis. The 1.5-mile Buffalo Tracks Nature Trail, whose buffalo tracks have earned it a place on the National Registry of Historic Places, is restricted to hikers.
In addition to the park's vast acreage, the reservoir is surrounded by a 5,000-acre state wildlife area and 10,000 acres of U.S. Corps of Engineers property, providing abundant wildlife for hunting, trapping and viewing. Quail, prairie chicken, pheasants, white-tailed deer, rabbit, coyote, fox, racoon and bobcat make their home here.
The park has a marina, beaches, picnic area, full-service campgrounds, equestrian campground, rental cabins and a wheelchair-accessible wildlife viewing area.
Not far from Kanopolis is Mushroom Rock State Park, the smallest, but one of the most unique state parks in Kansas.
Its unusual rock formations served as meeting places and landmarks for Native Americans and early pioneers such as John C. Fremont and Kit Carson. The five-acre park has no trails and camping is not allowed. There are toilet facilites available.
