Anglers flock to Glen Elder State Park on the shores of Waconda Lake, one of the largest and best fishing lakes in Kansas. Walleye, black and white bass and channel catfish are abundant.
Camping at the park can be with utilities or primitive. Swimmers, boaters and water-skiers enjoy the lake too, especially with the convenient marina.
The west end of the 1,250-acre park serves as a winter waterfowl refuge. Special hunting opportunities are available within the refuge on an advance application basis.
The Pawnee Overlook offers an excellent view of the lake, watching wildlife, and is a good spot for shoreline fishing, wading and picnicking.
The park also has facilities for outdoor games like horseshoes and volleyball. A fishing pond is stocked for children and people with disabilities. A 160-acre area on the southeast corner is open to vehicle access for disabled persons through a special permit. (Contact the Glen Elder Area Office for details.)
One of the historical features of the park is the Hopewell Church which was moved to the park in late 1994. It houses restrooms and a storm shelter for campers and is available by reservation. In 2005, a replica of the Waconda Springs was built and dedicated to the park.
