Eisenhower State Park and Melvern Wildlife Area skirt the 6,930-acre Melvern Reservoir. The diverse habitat of grasslands, riparian timber, wetlands and croplands supports a variety of wildlife, including deer, fox, bobcat, raccoons and many kinds of birds. Bald eagles are winter residents.
Channel catfish, sauger, walleye, crappie and black bass are taken from the lake.
Seasonal hunting with bow and shotgun is allowed in a designated area of the park. More hunting is available in the wildlife area, except for the 1,100-acre waterfowl refuge.
The park has a swimming beach and an interpretive half-mile nature trail. A 22-mile horseback trail follows the south side of the lake. Biking is popular on park roads. A rental cabin is available.
The park is open year-round, though facilities are limited in winter. Some years produce enough snowfall for cross-country skiing.
This park, located in the eastern Flint Hills, has 190 utility campsites, boat ramps, and numerous other facilities. There is a marina nearby.
