The Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge, located in north-central Kansas, lies among the rolling hills and narrow valley surrounding the North Fork of the Solomon River.
The refuge is in an area where the tall-grass prairies of the east meet the short-grass plains of the west. Grasses and wildlife common to both habitats are found.
Once great herds of bison roamed the grasslands, followed by wolves and Native American hunters. Now the refuge is primarily a nesting area for riparian and grassland neotropical birds.
Birds such as great blue herons and scores of shore birds herald the migrations of larger populations of ducks and geese.
