The 16 Plitvice lakes are found in one of the most scenic areas of Croatia. Tucked between high mountain peaks, centuries of natural build-up by moss has created travertine barriers, forming natural dams between the lakes and making the water a sparkling turquoise color.
The highest of the lakes is Proscansko, at 2,096 feet, and the lowest is Novakovica Brod, at 1,650 feet. The upper lakes are surrounded by forest, and are linked by numerous waterfalls. The lower lakes are surrounded by sparse underbrush.
Though the lakes are the centerpiece of the park, they occupy only a small part of the protected area. Forest covers most of the park, and supports a rich diversity of wildlife. Several animals, including the wolf, use the park as an important refuge.
Several ski resorts are located in the mountains near the park. There are a number of nature trails in the park, and guided tours are available. You can walk to see the lakes, or take trips by train or boat.
Several hotels have been built within the park grounds.
The Plitvice Lakes region has been recognized as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site.
