Hohe Tauern National Park is one of the last large, intact and undisturbed mountain environments in the heart of Europe.

A variety of mountain terrain, including glaciers, lakes, and waterfalls, support a rich diversity of wildlife.

Austria’s highest mountain, Grossglockner, at 11,145 feet, is in the park.

The animal life of the park varies by altitude, with mountain goats and sheep inhabiting higher elevations and other animals, such as ibex, chamois, deer and a variety of birds, in lower elevations.

A rich variety of alpine plants can be found in the park, including many flowers like the edelweiss.

A variety of outdoor activities are available, supported by a network of nature trails. Backpackers find shelters and huts along the trails.

Mountain climbing is possible on several of the park’s peaks. Several ski resorts are located just outside the park grounds.

The 31-mile-long Grossglockner Road is the most popular panoramic drive in Austria, and the most beautiful vistas along the drive are in Hohe Tauern. The road is open from May to November and a toll is charged.

Guided excursions into the park are offered in many neighboring towns. Depending on the tour and guide you select, you can learn about the plants and animals of the park or experience the culture of the surrounding communities.

Outdoor Activities

Mountain goats graze in an alpine meadow in Hohe Tauern National Park.

Waterfalls, like the Krimml Waterfalls, are abundant in the park.

Grossglocker is the highest mountain in Austria at 11,145 feet.
