The Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site preserves the southern part of Haida Gwaii, or Queen Charlotte Islands, a remote archipelago off the British Columbia coast, 400 miles north of Vancouver.
Its 138 islands and 363,000 acres of land feature a rich and fascinating diversity of life and protect the legacy of Haida culture, which has been nurtured by this First Nation for hundreds of generations.
The protected area, jointly managed by the Government of Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation, is known for its distinct island wildlife and plants and its outstanding Haida heritage.
The rugged San Christoval Mountains, rocky coastline and the remnants of native village sites offer a unique experience combining wilderness, solitude, spirituality and Haida culture.
Access to the protected area is challenging. The only way to and around Gwaii Haanas is by air or sea. Licensed tour operators provide competent guides and an intimate discovery of the islands' unique features.
Haida Gwaii Watchmen basecamps have been established at sites of cultural and natural significance. There, Watchmen provide protection for the cultural features and provide information about the unique Haida culture.
(This Watchmen program was established by the Haida to safeguard their sacred sites and educate the public even before the region received national park protection.)
Sea kayaking, sailboat and power boat charters are the most popular way to tour Gwaii Haanas. There are no trails or designated campsites. Visitor services within the protected area are very limited.
The sea holds an abundance of life. Gray whales migrate through the waters every spring on their way to summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea.
Killer whales, humpback, sei, finback and minke whales are frequently seen in these waters, along with dolphins, porpoises and harbor seals.
A large breeding colony of Steller sea lions and an estimated 750,000 seabirds are found here.
Visitor Info Centres are located in the Sandspit Airport and in Queen Charlotte on Wharf Street. The centers operate from May 1 to Sept. 30.
