Bic Park (Parc du Bic), is a 12.8 square-mile coastal region of capes, bays, inlets, sand bars, cliffs, islands and mountains swept by saline air.
Nesting throughout this rugged coastal park are thousands of marine birds, including the eider duck. On the scraggy rocks are rare wild flowers and basking on rocks close to shore are gray and harbor seals.
There are scenic outlooks to explore at Champlain and Saint-Fabien. You can expect to find herds of seals along the reefs at Pointe-aux-Epinettes and Cap-Caribou.
Eider ducks are common on Bicquette Island where there are between 8,000 to 12,000 nests. Peregrine falcons introduced in 1988 now nest in the park.
The Sud-Ouest River harbors annual Atlantic salmon and eel runs. Remains of a Native American settlement dating back 8,000 years are found here.
The park can be entered at four points along Highway 132: Saint-Fabien-sur-Mer in the west, Cap-à-l'Orignal in the central sector, Sud-Ouest in the east and Havre-du-Bic along the north.
Activities available at the park include camping, hiking trails, berry picking, nature centers, birdwatching, kayaking, sailing, guided walking tours and biking.
In winter, there is cross-country skiing (a fee is charged) and snowshoeing off-trail.
Because of the presence of seals and nesting birds, L'Anse à l'Orignal is off-limits to kayakers and boaters.
Mountaineering is also not permitted to protect wildlife at high elevations.
