Covering 260 square miles, Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier is one of Québec's outstanding provincial parks.
Located 25 miles north of Québec City, this park preserves a deep river valley nestled between cliffs towering up to 1,800 feet above the Jacques-Cartier river, a sometimes calm and sometimes tumultuous river that is popular for canoeing and kayaking.
The park stands at the highest elevation in the Laurentides.
The Jacques-Cartier and the Sautauriski rivers are also home to spawning salmon that can be seen swimming upstream.
Riverfront hikers and campers are also treated to moose ambling through the wetlands flanking the rivers in the early morning mist. Wolves also reside in the region.
The park offers a rich assortment of wildlife and recreational activities. In summer, there are a variety of guided nature walks and programs that include canoeing trips, guided walking and hiking tours, camping, canoe camping, kayaking, bike touring and fishing.
During summer, some cabins, campsites and rustic camps can be rented. For information, call 800-665-6527.
In winter, visitors cross-country ski, or spend the night in cabins or rustic camps during multi-day ski and snowshoe treks. There are many miles of skiing and snowshoeing trails and the panoramic views of the Jacques-Cartier river and icy cliffs are dazzling.
For information about renting lodging places during winter call 800-665-6527.
