Elk Island, Canada's first federal wildlife sanctuary, is an oasis for more than 200 elk, which it was established to protect in 1906. Moose, beaver and coyote inhabit the rolling hills and stands of aspen situated off Hwy. 16.

It is rare that park visitors do not encounter wildlife here and the park boasts the highest populaton of hoofed animals, including elk, bison and moose, in North America.

The park is also a special venue to enjoy spectacular prairie sunsets on Astotin Lake.

The park's animals are active all year-round. There are more than 44 different kinds of mammals and about 250 species of birds that have been identified in the park. Elk Island is home to North America’s smallest and largest land mammal; the pygmy shrew and the wood bison.

There are many miles of trails to explore in Elk Island National Park.

The park offers many summer activities including hiking and walking, canoeing and kayaking, picnicking, camping, golfing and playgrounds. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular.

Interpretive programs are offered on weekends during summer.

Sandy Beach Campground is in the Astotin Recreation area and has 77 sites. The campground has showers and washroom facilities nearby.

Winter camping and group camping are available.

Sites can be reserved ahead of time by calling 877-RESERVE.
