Come September, October and November, more than 20,000 sandhill cranes head to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. That’s most of the eastern population of these large birds.
Spring sees fewer birds, but their elaborate courtship dance makes up for the smaller numbers. Photographers and others watch from park observation towers.
The 8,062-acre wildlife area is a favorite of upland and waterfowl hunters. During hunting season, a hunter check station is open. Otherwise, visitors may use a self-service information area.
