The Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is located in southern Illinois. The 43,600-acre refuge is an annual migration stop for more than 120,000 Canada geese.
Common mammal species include Virginia opossum, shrew, brown bat, white-tailed deer, fox squirrel, southern flying squirrel and meadow jumping mouse, as well as coyote, red fox, long-tailed weasel and mink.
Hiking, wildlife observation, fishing, hunting, boating and camping are popular activities.
