Eagle Creek State Park is a 2,400-acre park on the east side of Lake Shelbyville. There are over 11,000 acres of water, 250 miles of shoreline and large tracts of carefully maintained indigenous woodlands.
This area offers year-round recreational opportunities.
A swimming beach is open seasonally within the park at Wolf Creek. Rental boats and motors are available from private marinas along the lake, which also provide a full range of boating and fishing supplies.
The lake is home to black and white crappie, largemouth bass, walleye, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, muskie, bullhead, carp and sunfish.
On land, there are several hiking trails ranging from short marked nature trails to a 12-mile backpack trail, and there is a horse trail at Wolf Creek.
The 12-mile trip starts in Eagle Creek but soon enters federally-regulated land. With proper permission (contact the Corps of Engineers at 217-774-3951), hikers can camp along the trail.
Portions of the park have been cleared of physical barriers and are accessible to disabled visitors.
In 1998, Eagle Creek opened the Butterfly Barn. There are educational programs in summer covering many aspects of this beautiful insect.
Wildlife includes deer, pheasant, rabbits, wild turkey and songbirds. Quality upland hunting, as well as archery deer and handicap deer hunting, is allowed in portions of the park.
There are numerous campsites ranging from primitive to fully equipped at Wolf Creek and Eagle Creek. For those who prefer more comfortable accommodations, the Eagle Creek Resort and Conference Center are within the park (800-876-3245).
