When emigrants passed through narrow breaks in the rocks in what is now Massacre Rocks State Park, they gave them names such as Devil's Gate and Gate of Death. They feared that an ambush might await them on the other side.
The recorded skirmishes between the Oregon Trail emigrants and the Shoshone people took place one mile east of the park on Aug. 9 and 10, 1862. Ten emigrants lost their lives, but most arrived safely. One mile south at Register Rock, the travelers rested and inscribed their names in the rock.
Today, Massacre Rocks State Park covers nearly 1,000 acres of land rich in geological and cultural history. The prehistoric Bonneville Flood scoured the landscape and polished huge boulders found throughout the area.
The Snake River runs through the park, offering excellent fishing, rafting and boating. Stocks of trout and smallmouth bass are plentiful and a boat ramp is available at the southern end of the park.
The high desert plains are fragrant with sagebrush, cactus and juniper trees. Hikers enjoy nearly 10 miles of trails. The trail to view the old Oregon Trail wagon ruts is paved for wheelchair access.
The campground has two camping loops with restroom and shower facilities and also has four camping cabins available for rent.
The park is a popular bird watching area as well with over 200 species identified annually. During winter, many come to view bald eagles.
