Farragut State Park provides southern access to the clear, sparkling waters of 50-mile-long Lake Pend Oreille, which reaches depths of more than 1,000 feet. World-record fish have been bagged in these waters, including a 37-pound rainbow trout.
The expansive, cold water is rough for paddling, but is popular for sailing, motorboating and fishing.
This park's natural resources encompass 4,000 acres of forest and fields. There are more than 30 miles of multi-use trails and a varied population of wildlife, including the white-tailed deer and black bear.
This area was once the site of the second-largest naval training center in the world, which was decommissioned just after the end of World War II. The station's brig is the only significant naval structure that remains today.
Several campgrounds offer 189 sites, including 123 with electric hookups. Group areas are also available by reservation.
Farragut's trails are shared by mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians.
Among the birds found at the park are hawks, owls, woodpeckers and Idaho's state bird, the mountain bluebird.
