Ponderosa State Park covers a 1,000-acre peninsula that juts into Payette Lake, just outside the town of McCall.
The park's landscape changes dramatically from arid sagebrush flats to lakefront, and from flat terrain to steep cliffs.
Visitors can hike or bike along trails and dirt roads. The park offers 163 campsites that can be reserved from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
The 150-foot-tall ponderosa pine is the most noticeable species of tree. Birds include ospreys, red-tailed hawks, bald eagles, Canada geese, wood ducks and mallards, as well as songbirds, hummingbirds and woodpeckers.
The park is rich in wildflowers, especially along the interpretive trail that winds through Meadow Marsh.
The 500-acre North Beach Unit on the lake is bisected by the Payette River, which has canoeing and kayaking available. There are 23 nonreservable campsites at Northwest Passage Campground with central water and vault toilets.
During winter, there is great cross-country skiing on 11 miles of groomed trails.
