The Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge covers 20,721 acres, including 11,000 surface acres of Lake Walcott. The refuge is home to more than 50,000 ducks and geese year-round and up to 100,000 during the spring and fall migrations. Migrating tundra swans can be seen in spring in shallow bays and shores of the lake.
Minidoka also hosts the largest pelican colony in Idaho. Other wildlife found on the refuge includes bald and golden eagles, hawks, owls, mule deer and antelope.
Adjacent to the refuge is Lake Walcott State Park with a picnic area, boating facilities, a disc golf course and other amenities. State recreation fees apply for the use of the park facilities, but entrance to the refuge is free.
