Stand on a spiny ridge along the Continental Divide, where Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark first claimed the Pacific Northwest for the United States.
The 39-mile byway climbs from Tendoy to Lemhi Pass on the Idaho and Montana borders.
The byway crosses slopes covered with grasses and sagebrush, thick forests of pine and deep canyons. The gravel road is mostly a single lane, but it can be driven by passenger cars from June to October. It takes roughly three hours to complete.
There is public access to a "probable" Lewis campsite, used on Aug. 12, 1805, that requires a hike of one or two miles, depending on the type of vehicle used.
