People seeking to be healed still visit the remains of the heiau ho'ola, a temple for treating the sick, which is found in this 334-acre forested, inland park at the end of Aiea Heights Drive in Aiea Heights on Oahu.
Built in the 1600s, the temple was used by healers who used medicinal plants, such as ti leaves for fever and noni for heart disease, that grow in the area.
The easy 4.8-mile Aiea loop trail begins in a eucalyptus and ironwood forest and runs along a ridge, offering views of Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and the Koolau Range.
Reservations for the campground must be made one month in advance by writing or calling the district office in Honolulu. There is a fee charged for camping.
