Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui preserves a nationally significant portion of Haleakala Volcano and unique native Hawaiian ecosystems. The park allows public access to its geologic, scientific, scenic and historic features and offers many opportunities for recreation, education, inspiration and enjoyment.

There are three locations in the park available to visitors: the summit, the backcountry wilderness and the coastal area at Kipahulu.

Kipahulu is reached along the Hana Highway coast road, while the summit is accessible from the Haleakala Highway. Both roads begin at Kahului. The wilderness area is accessed by a trail system at the summit with overnight camping available by permit at the headquarters visitor center.

There are three visitor centers; one at Kipahulu and two in the summit area. The headquarters visitor center and permit office is located one mile after the summit entrance station to the park on Haleakala Highway. The Haleakala Visitor Center is located near the top of the mountain 11 miles past the entrance station.

Staff provide three daily presentations at the summit and are available during business hours every day. Visitors can drive to three overlooks, and to the summit. Short walks into the wilderness are available as well as extended travel. Camping is available at Hosmer Grove

near the Summit entrance and at Kipahulu campground on a first come first served basis.

Camping in the wilderness is by permit only and restricted to designated sites or in cabins. There is a cabin lottery system offering stays in the backcountry for $75 per night rental. The three cabins are reached by three-, six- and 10-mile hikes. Visitors can call the park between 1 and 3 p.m. to fill cabin vacancies and cancellations.

Kipahulu offers a chance to revisit the traditions of old Hawaii. This remote setting provides dramatic coastal and valley views, lush forest and scenic waterfalls. Flash floods can occur with no warning. Swimming in 'Ohe'o stream is at the visitors own risk. No lifeguards are stationed at this wild scenic river
